Solar eclipse draws crowds across the United Kingdom
A partial solar eclipse drew large crowds across the United Kingdom on Wednesday, August 12. Observers gathered at various locations, including Stonehenge, the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, and Calton Hill in Edinburgh, to witness the event. In Edinburgh, the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh reported that the eclipse reached approximately 91 per cent coverage.
Following the eclipse, Google reported a 650 per cent increase in searches for ‘sore eyes’ in the UK, amid warnings from experts to use proper ISO 12312-2 solar eclipse glasses. Later that night, the Perseid meteor shower also became visible across the UK, peaking in the early hours of Thursday, August 13.
In Sussex, the eclipse was noted alongside a heatwave, with local observers reporting unusual avian behavior, such as birds flying to roost early as light levels faded.
