Solar eclipse drives surge in flight searches to northern Spain

KAYAK reported a sharp rise in flight searches for destinations in northern Spain ahead of the total solar eclipse on 12 August, the first visible from the Iberian Peninsula in more than a century. International searches for A Coruña, Bilbao, Oviedo and Santander jumped 98 %, while domestic searches to those cities grew 11 % compared with the same period last year. Overall, searches for flights to northern Spanish locations between 8 and 16 August increased markedly, reflecting KAYAK’s 2026 trend forecast that natural phenomena will shape travel plans.

The agency noted that Madrid also saw a modest rise in flight queries, serving as a hub for travelers heading to the eclipse path. KAYAK’s European commercial director, Natalia Díez‑Rivas, said the eclipse is "a historic milestone" and that the data show travelers are eager to experience it. The heightened interest underscores the role of unique natural events in driving tourism to Spain this summer.
