Solar eclipse of 2027 to be one of the longest of the century
A major solar eclipse is set to occur on August 2, 2027, marking one of the longest total solar eclipses of the century. The period of totality is expected to reach a maximum duration of 6 minutes and 23 seconds, making it the longest total eclipse visible from land since 1991. No eclipse with a longer duration is expected to occur anywhere on Earth until 2114.
The eclipse is part of the Saros 136 astronomical series. The path of totality will span approximately 258 kilometers in width and 15,227 kilometers in length, traveling from southern Spain and Gibraltar through Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. The shadow will then cross parts of Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia before moving over the Indian Ocean.
In southern Spain, coastal Mediterranean locations are expected to experience nearly five minutes of totality, while certain areas in Tunisia may see durations exceeding five minutes.
