Spain prepares for total solar eclipse on Aug 12, 2026

On 12 August 2026 a total solar eclipse will cross Spain, the first total eclipse over the Iberian Peninsula since 1912. The path of totality will sweep a 290‑km‑wide band from Galicia through Castile‑León, the Basque Country, Navarre, Aragón, Madrid, Castilla‑La Mancha, Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands, lasting about one minute at each location.

The Spanish government has created an inter‑ministerial commission to coordinate safety and logistics. Protección Civil has issued a security plan to manage crowds, traffic and the heightened wildfire risk, while the Centre for Emergency Coordination will monitor the event from 6 August. Municipalities such as Valencia are distributing free, CE‑marked eclipse glasses and warning against the use of sunglasses, radiographs or other improvised filters. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has published an alert emphasizing the need for ISO‑12312‑2‑certified eyewear.

Tourism is booming: rural houses in Valladolid report 90 % occupancy and prices up to €800 per night; hotels in Lleida are approaching full capacity; and cities like Gijón’s LABoral Centre will host a “LightSound” device that converts the eclipse’s light changes into sound for visually impaired visitors. The event is expected to attract up to two million spectators, including international “eclipse hunters” from New Zealand, Australia, the United States and Canada, prompting extensive transport and accommodation planning across the country.
