Solar energy developments: Agrivoltaic risks and balcony PV savings

Researchers at the University of Montpellier in France have identified technical challenges regarding agrivoltaics, where solar panels are installed over agricultural land. An experiment on a 500 square meter plot revealed that static PV panels can disrupt the natural water balance of the soil. This creates a “rain curtain” effect, where water flows off the modules in concentrated streams, causing erosion and localized flooding, while areas directly beneath the panels remain excessively dry.

The study suggests that implementing automation and algorithms to control panel angles can mitigate these issues, reducing precipitation unevenness from 2.13 to 0.22. This technology could help prevent crop loss while maintaining the benefits of dual land use for food and energy.

In a separate development regarding residential solar use, analysis from the Instrat Foundation in Poland indicates that balcony-mounted photovoltaics are becoming a viable option for apartment dwellers. An 800 W installation on a south-facing balcony could save between 740 and 757 PLN annually, with a potential return on investment in just over three years. While east or west-facing balconies produce 20-30% less energy, they still offer significant savings compared to traditional grid costs.
