Solar energy innovations utilize agrivoltaics and livestock for efficiency

New developments in solar energy integration are addressing environmental and maintenance challenges through agrivoltaics and solar grazing.

A study by the University of Jaén (UJA) has demonstrated the benefits of agrivoltaics, using semi-transparent solar panels in greenhouses. Researchers found that these panels can reduce indoor temperatures by up to five degrees and significantly lower water demand. Specifically, cadmium telluride (CdTe) panels reduced water consumption by 31%, while amorphous silicon (a-Si) panels reduced it by over 60%. This technology offers a potential solution for agricultural sectors facing structural droughts, such as in Andalusia, Spain.

Simultaneously, solar grazing is emerging as a method to manage vegetation around large-scale photovoltaic plants. Instead of using herbicides or mechanical mowers, which can be difficult to operate under panels, some facilities are using sheep to control plant growth. This practice is already being utilized on a large scale in Texas, USA, where companies like Texas Solar Sheep and SB Energy manage thousands of animals across thousands of hectares. This method helps prevent shadows from overgrowth and reduces fire risks caused by dry vegetation.
