Initial developments include projects like the Battle Butte Solar Farm in Montana, which is designed to allow sheep to graze around solar panels to support ranchers facing climate volatility and rising costs. In Hadley, Massachusetts, an agrivoltaic project at Joe Czajkowski’s farm utilizes 832 mobile solar panels to generate approximately 445 kilowatts of energy. These panels are spaced eight meters apart to accommodate tractors for cultivating crops such as broccoli, spinach, and sweet corn.
Solar capacity is also being expanded through the repurposing of closed landfills. In New Haven, Connecticut, a site managed by Greenskies Clean Energy utilizes ballasted support systems to install over 1,900 photovoltaic modules on a sealed surface without piercing the cover. This project is expected to produce more than 1.4 million kWh of electricity annually, highlighting the potential for the more than 10,000 closed landfills across the U.S. to host solar capacity.
Beyond crop cultivation, solar grazing is being utilized as a maintenance method to manage vegetation and reduce fire risks. In Texas, companies such as Texas Solar Sheep and SB Energy manage thousands of animals across thousands of hectares to control plant growth without the use of herbicides or mechanical mowers.
