Solar energy regulations shift in the Netherlands and Belgium

Changes to solar energy regulations and installation requirements are impacting consumers in the Netherlands and Belgium. In the Netherlands, the net metering scheme (salderingsregeling), which allows households and small businesses to offset electricity fed back into the grid against their consumption, is scheduled to end on December 31, 2026. While this change may affect financial returns, experts suggest that maximizing direct self-consumption of generated energy remains beneficial. Additionally, compensation rates for fed-back electricity are expected to decrease starting next calendar year, though grid connection costs for consumers may fall in 2027.

In Belgium, warnings have been issued regarding plug-and-play solar panels. While these easy-to-install systems are legal, they must comply with specific safety standards. Users are advised to ensure their equipment, particularly the inverter, is included on the list of approved devices from Synergrid to ensure safe connection to the Belgian electricity grid.
