Solar energy schemes drive cost savings for Indian farmers and households

Government-backed solar initiatives in India, including the PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana schemes, are providing significant financial relief to both agricultural and residential sectors. Under PM-KUSUM, farmers in regions like Haryana and Jhajjar are utilizing solar-powered irrigation pumps to reduce dependence on grid electricity and diesel, lowering monthly expenses and allowing for more flexible daytime farming operations.

In residential areas such as Sheikhpura, the PM Surya Ghar scheme is helping households reduce or eliminate electricity bills through rooftop solar installations, which offer subsidies of up to Rs 78,000 and provide up to 300 units of free electricity monthly.

In the financial sector, green energy stocks have recently mirrored broader market trends. While some stocks experienced volatility, the industry is watching for upcoming developments, such as Avaada filing an updated DRHP for a potential 2026 IPO. Additionally, falling international lithium prices have driven Chinese cell prices below $50/kWh, a trend expected to benefit the Indian storage market by accelerating solar uptake.
