Solar energy systems offer electricity savings for German households

Small-scale solar systems, such as balcony solar plants, offer German households a way to reduce annual electricity costs by several hundred euros. Under the Solarpaket 1 regulations, rules for small solar systems connected to the home grid have been simplified.

A 2000 W solar system with optimal orientation can produce approximately 2000 to 2200 kWh of electricity annually. While the total power of the modules may reach 2000 W, the feed-in into the home grid is limited to 800 W. Based on an electricity price of 35 cents per kilowatt-hour, the theoretical annual value of production could reach approximately 770 euros. However, because households typically consume only 65 to 75 percent of the energy at the moment it is produced, the estimated direct annual savings are around 577 euros.

Installation for these systems is often straightforward. According to Verbraucherzentrale Niedersachsen, systems meeting the DIN VDE V 0126-95 standard can be connected via a standard household socket with protective contact, often eliminating the need for a professional electrician. For systems exceeding 2000 W or those requiring battery storage, professional installation is generally recommended.
