Romania energy sector updates: gas reserves, solar investments, and heating costs
Romania is strengthening its energy security as natural gas storage levels reach nearly 90%, placing the country among the top five in Europe for reserves. This capacity is deemed sufficient for the upcoming winter season. Additionally, a new gas-fired power plant in Mintia has successfully tested its first turbine, with a second expected by year-end. While gas production in the Black Sea is on schedule for 2027, nuclear production at the Cernavoda plant remains suspended due to low Danube water levels.
The renewable energy sector is seeing significant activity. In Prahova, projects worth over 140 million lei are underway to build photovoltaic parks for public institutions. In Sibiu, a 28 million lei solar park is planned to power public lighting. Furthermore, Turkish investors are expanding their presence in the Romanian market, focusing on solar energy and battery storage projects. Legislative changes are also facilitating easier installation of residential solar panels and potential geothermal energy exploitation by local authorities.
Regarding consumer costs, natural gas prices on the Romanian market recently hit a four-year high. However, residents in Bucharest will see a reduction in heating costs starting November 1, 2026, due to a VAT reduction from 21% to 11% for thermal energy during the cold season.
