Solar industry faces AI cost-saving tools and potential German grid fee increases
The German solar industry is facing both technological advancements and regulatory challenges. Fronius, an Austrian family company, has introduced an AI-driven energy cost assistant designed to reduce electricity costs for photovoltaic (PV) system owners by up to 14.7%. The technology automatically optimizes energy flows by analyzing expected production, consumption, and electricity tariffs to manage battery storage strategies effectively.
Simultaneously, the solar industry association BSW-Solar is criticizing a proposed grid fee reform by the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur). The reform includes a 'prosumer surcharge' on the basic electricity connection fee, which could cost PV owners up to 165 euros annually. BSW-Solar warns that these increased costs, combined with potential cuts to feed-in tariffs, could act as an investment brake for private solar, battery storage, electric mobility, and heat pump technologies.
