Solar power helps European grids manage heatwaves

An analysis by the think tank Ember reveals that photovoltaic power plants were a critical factor in helping European electricity grids manage extreme heatwaves this year. While heatwaves and droughts increased electricity demand—primarily due to rising cooling needs—and hindered the operation of some conventional power plants, record solar production helped prevent widespread supply disruptions.

During the observed period, daily electricity consumption rose significantly in several countries: 28% in Italy, 23% in Hungary, 14% in France, and 13% in Spain. The study notes that prolonged high temperatures have shifted traditional load profiles, creating new summer peaks driven by air conditioning use.
