Solomon Islands delays Mineral Resources Bill for consultation

Prime Minister Matthew Wale has announced a two-month delay in tabling the Mineral Resources Bill following recommendations from the Parliamentary Bills and Legislation Committee. The extension is intended to allow for a deeper review of seven specific proposed amendments to strengthen the regulatory framework for the mining sector.

The decision is expected to result in a projected revenue loss of approximately $1 billion, as the amendments involve a primary source of government income. Despite this, the Prime Minister stated that the government respects the committee’s recommendation and intends to complete the process and pass the legislation before the end of the calendar year.

The additional consultation period will focus on the identified amendments and address concerns raised in petitions from landowners in Gold Ridge. Independent Group Leader and Central Guadalcanal MP Peter Shanel Angovaka welcomed the move, noting that the extra time is necessary to address critical environmental impacts on local communities.
