Solomon Islands MP withdraws no-confidence motion against PM Wale

Manasseh Maelanga, an East Malaita Member of Parliament, has withdrawn a motion of no confidence against Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale. The withdrawal brings an end to several days of political uncertainty and speculation that had been building since the motion was signed on August 29.

Prime Minister Wale expressed relief at the decision, noting his concern regarding rising public anger and the potential for social instability during such political disputes. Wale stated that the situation highlighted the necessity of increased consultation with ministers and Members of Parliament to ensure change is achieved through collective decision-making.

The political tension follows a period of instability for Wale, who has held office for just over three months. The motion coincided with the resignations of three Cabinet ministers and the dismissal of Finance Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo. Maelanga stated that his decision to withdraw the motion was not based on personal ambition or interest, but was a move intended to avoid creating further division within the country.
