Solomon Islands official links SME success to national economic growth

Riley Mesepitu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration, stated that the success of local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is vital for job creation, household incomes, and economic growth in the Solomon Islands. He made these remarks during the opening of the National Business Forum 2026 held at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) lecture theatre.

The forum serves as a national dialogue involving business leaders, development partners, government agencies, academia, and entrepreneurs. This year's program is structured around four primary pillars: strengthening local enterprises, improving access to finance and capital, promoting entrepreneurship among women and youth, and connecting businesses to markets, trade opportunities, standards, and compliance.

Mesepitu emphasized that fostering a robust business environment requires a partnership between the government and various sectors, including financial institutions, civil society, and international partners. He also highlighted the necessity of including women and young people to build a more inclusive and dynamic private sector.
