Trabzon Rail System Project to begin construction on September 1
The Trabzon Rail System Project is set to begin construction with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for September 1, 2026, at Avni Aker Millet Bahçesi. Announced by Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, the 16.2-kilometer line will serve as a major public transportation backbone for the city's east-west axis.
The first phase of the project will connect Akçaabat to Trabzon Airport, featuring 16 stations. Key stops include the City Hospital, Trabzonspor Stadium, Karadeniz Technical University, and the city center. The system is designed to handle approximately 87,000 passengers daily, using vehicles with a 360-passenger capacity. The journey across the route is expected to take approximately 26 minutes.
Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Metin Genç noted that parts of the route will run at surface level, while sections approaching the city center will utilize underground tunnels to preserve the urban fabric. The project is being implemented through a partnership between Kalyon İnşaat and Makyol İnşaat, with an estimated construction period of four years.
