Soma mine collapse kills five workers in Manisa

A mine collapse at the İmbat mine in Soma, Manisa, has resulted in the deaths of five workers. The incident occurred around 13:15 on October 1, 2026.

Rescue operations involving approximately 756 personnel from agencies such as AFAD, the gendarmerie, and health services have concluded. Authorities confirmed that five miners—Halit Ersay, Kerim Ören, Ramazan İnce, İsa Olcay, and Ömer Karakaya—lost their lives. Two other workers, Süleyman Şakrak and İbrahim Çimen, were rescued alive and treated for injuries.

Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced that an immediate investigation has been launched, with three republic prosecutors assigned to the case under the coordination of the Chief Public Prosecutor. Additionally, the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Vedat Işıkhan, appointed a chief inspector to investigate the causes of the accident.

Manisa Governor Vahdettin Özkan has been coordinating the response and providing support to the affected families. DİSK President Arzu Çerkezoğlu has called for a full investigation into the entire responsibility chain, including employers and regulatory inspectors.
