Soma mine collapse and investigation

Overview

On October 1, a mine collapse occurred at the İmbat Madencilik facility in Soma, Manisa, resulting in the deaths of five workers: Halit Ersay, Kerim Ören, Ramazan İnce, İsa Olcay, and Ömer Karakaya. Two other miners were rescued from the site with injuries.

The Bağımsız Maden İş Union criticized the incident, labeling it a “murder” rather than an accident and alleging that the company prioritized production speed over safety protocols.

Following the collapse, an investigation was launched by the Soma Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. Nine individuals, including the general manager, deputy general manager, production manager, occupational health and safety manager, and various engineers and supervisors, were detained and arrested. The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security also dispatched expert teams and chief inspectors to investigate the circumstances.
