Somali and Turkish forces free hijacked MV Lutuf
Somali and Turkish forces have successfully freed the MV Lutuf, a Cameroon-flagged cargo vessel hijacked by pirates on August 17 off the coast of Puntland. According to the Somali Ministry of Defence, the ten-day military operation resulted in the deaths of 14 pirates and the destruction of four pirate boats. The operation was conducted under a bilateral defence cooperation agreement between Somalia and Türkiye aimed at enhancing maritime security.
The vessel, which was traveling from Türkiye to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is now reported to be continuing its journey. The rescue comes amid a resurgence of piracy in the region; the International Maritime Organization has recorded at least 15 attacks off the Somali coast this year, the highest frequency since 2013.
However, the circumstances of the release are disputed. Puntland State authorities have rejected the official account of a military rescue, instead accusing the Somali federal government and Türkiye of paying a ransom to the pirates. Puntland officials claim they monitored communications suggesting the release was facilitated by ransom payments rather than military force, warning that such actions incentivize future hijackings.
