Somali maritime police rescue tankers amid piracy surge and suspect escape
The Puntland Maritime Police Force has conducted operations to rescue hijacked oil tankers off the coast of Somalia, though the missions have resulted in both successes and casualties.
During a planned operation in the Bandar Beyla district, security forces stormed the Palau-flagged MT Honour 25. While the operation successfully rescued 17 crew members, the ship's crew reported that five individuals—including three Pakistanis, one Indian, and one Myanmar national—were killed during the assault. Four other crew members were injured.
In a separate recent operation, the maritime police recovered the oil tanker Sibu 1 near Garacad. While the crew was rescued safely, the mission faced a significant setback when 28 of the 41 arrested suspects escaped while being transported to Garowe. Security officials have raised suspicions of internal complicity, noting that the suspects were being moved at night and that the transport vehicle's door was found unlocked.
These incidents occur amid a sharp rise in Somali piracy, with at least 15 attacks recorded since April, marking the highest frequency since 2013.
