Somali piracy reaches 10-year high amid maritime escalation

Piracy activity off the coast of Somalia has reached its highest level in ten years. Data from the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) shows a significant upward trend, with 13 incidents recorded in the first seven months of 2026, compared to eight in 2024 and five in 2025.

In a related development, a maritime standoff has escalated following the hijacking of the cargo ship Lutuf. Reports indicate that a Turkish naval vessel positioned near the hijacked ship allegedly opened fire on a group of men returning to the shoreline after providing supplies to the vessel. The strike reportedly killed four men and injured two others. While the circumstances remain unconfirmed by official Turkish or Somali government sources, the incident marks a potential escalation in the regional crisis.

Currently, three vessels—the Lutuf, Sward, and Asana—are being held in the Garmaal area by pirates demanding ransom. Experts suggest the resurgence of piracy is driven by a complex interplay of internal Somali factors, including economic hardship, drought, and weak government structures.
