Somalia faces resurgence of piracy in the Gulf of Aden
Somalia is facing a resurgence of maritime piracy, with authorities reporting an increase in attacks and vessel hijackings in the Gulf of Aden and off the Puntland coast. Since April 2024, at least eight attacks have been recorded. Pirate groups are reportedly using more sophisticated technology, including Starlink satellite services, anti-aircraft guns, and missiles, to conduct operations.
In a recent high-profile incident, the cargo vessel MV Lutuf was hijacked and subsequently released on August 29 following a joint operation involving Somali and Turkish forces. Another incident involved the hijacking of the Eritrean-flagged MT Sibu 1 near Yemen. Puntland authorities have warned that these pirate networks may have links to criminal groups in Yemen.
Diplomatically, Egypt is pressing Somalia to secure the release of eight Egyptian sailors who have been held for months aboard the hijacked vessel MT Eureka. During talks in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty urged Somali authorities to intensify efforts to protect the crew and ensure their safe return. Somalia has called for enhanced international maritime security cooperation, emphasizing that such efforts should be conducted under the leadership of the federal government.
