Somerset hospitals expand patient independence initiative

The Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is expanding a nurse-led quality improvement scheme designed to help patients maintain independence, dignity, and mobility during hospital stays. The initiative focuses on reducing patient deconditioning by encouraging clinically able patients to get out of bed and use toilets rather than relying on bedpans or bottles.

Following successful trials at Crewkerne and Wincanton Community hospitals, the project has reported an 88 per cent reduction in bedpan use and an 86 per cent drop in bottle use. Data indicates that seven out of ten patients improved their mobility during their stay, while others maintained their existing level of independence.

The program, led by hospital matron Tania Collin, is inspired by the national ‘#EndPJParalysis’ campaign. The rollout will now extend to Frome and West Mendip community hospitals, with long-term goals to implement the approach at Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil Hospital.
