Somerset NHS patient independence initiatives
Overview
The Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is expanding a nurse-led quality improvement scheme aimed at helping patients maintain independence, dignity, and mobility during hospital stays.
Following successful trials at Crewkerne and Wincanton Community hospitals, the project reported an 88 per cent reduction in bedpan use and an 86 per cent drop in bottle use. Data indicated that seven out of ten patients improved their mobility during their stay. Inspired by the national ‘#EndPJParalysis’ campaign, the rollout will extend to Frome and West Mendip community hospitals, with long-term goals to implement the approach at Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil Hospital.
