Sonam Wangchuk Calls July 20 ‘Second Freedom Movement’ March to Indian Parliament

Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, who began an indefinite hunger strike on 28 June 2026 over alleged examination irregularities, has appealed for a peaceful “Chalo Sansad” march on 20 July 2026, the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session. Although police moved him from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital on 18 July, he urged supporters nationwide to assemble in New Delhi and march toward Parliament, describing the event as India’s “second freedom movement” that seeks “freedom from fear” and “freedom from injustice”.

The protest, organized by the Cockroach Janata Party, demands the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, accountability for paper‑leak scandals, compensation for families of students who died by suicide linked to exam pressures, and broader reforms to restore confidence in the examination system. Wangchuk’s participation in the march remains uncertain due to his medical condition, but he reiterated that the mobilisation should proceed regardless of his personal attendance.
