Activist Sonam Wangchuk halted his 26‑day hunger strike on 23 July at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram after Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda and Minister of State Jitendra Singh delivered written assurances from the central government. The assurances included: no legal action or FIRs against peaceful protesters, compensation for families of students who died by suicide after the NEET paper‑leak, and a commitment to discuss examination‑system reforms and the paper‑leak issue in Parliament.

Wangchuk, who had been shifted from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta following a Delhi High Court order, said the guarantees were secured after lengthy negotiations and concerns over potential violence. While he praised the concessions, he emphasized that the broader “Cockroach Janata Party” (CJP) movement would continue until Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns. The government also announced plans for fast‑track courts and stricter penalties for exam‑paper leaks.

Wangchuk’s fast, which caused severe health deterioration, drew nationwide student protests over alleged examination irregularities and sparked one of the largest recent dissent movements against the Modi administration.
