Delhi High Court rejects Sonam Wangchuk's plea to shift from Safdarjung Hospital

Activist Sonam Wangchuk, 59, began a hunger strike on June 28 to demand the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged NEET exam paper leaks. After about three weeks of fasting, police removed him from Jantar Mantar and placed him in the government‑run Safdarjung Hospital despite his and his wife Gitanjali Angmo’s objections.

Angmo filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking his discharge and transfer to a private hospital, alleging “illegal detention” and citing heavy police presence in the ward. The court, hearing on July 19, ruled that the government’s decision to hospitalise Wangchuk was not arbitrary, noting that doctors were monitoring his condition, that he had consented to oral fluids and supplements, and that there was no evidence of force or violation of bodily autonomy. The judges declined to grant interim relief, allowed the family unrestricted access, and ordered the authorities to submit a status report within three days, with the next hearing set for July 24.

A medical bulletin from Safdarjung and VMMC confirmed that Wangchuk’s vital signs are stable but require round‑the‑clock monitoring due to the physiological stress of prolonged fasting. The court’s decision keeps him in Safdarjung Hospital while the protest movement continues.
