Sonam Wangchuk Hospitalised After 20‑Day Hunger Strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar

Engineer, climate activist and education‑reformer Sonam Wangchuk has been on a 20‑day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged NEET exam irregularities and a paper‑leak scandal. On 18 July, Delhi police, citing a Delhi High Court order to monitor his health, forcibly moved him to Safdarjung Hospital. Medical bulletins say his condition is stable but he suffers severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and has lost about nine kilograms; continuous clinical monitoring is being provided by Vardhman Mahavir Medical College, Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS. Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, says no oral or intravenous treatment should be administered without family consent and has petitioned the High Court for a transfer to a private facility. Opposition leaders, including MPs Supriya Sule and others, visited the site and pledged to raise the issue in the Monsoon Session of Parliament, while a mass march to Parliament is planned for 20 July. Security has been stepped up around Jantar Mantar, and several other protestors remain on indefinite hunger strikes.
