Sonnen GmbH files for insolvency

German solar battery pioneer sonnen GmbH has filed for insolvency, putting approximately 400 jobs at risk across Germany, Italy, Great Britain, the United States, and Australia. Headquartered in Wildpoldsried, Bavaria, the company specializes in residential and small-business solar energy storage systems and has installed over 150,000 units globally.

The filing follows a recent change in ownership; the energy conglomerate Shell sold the company to asset management firm Tiven in August 2026. Financial reports indicate a significant downturn, with revenue dropping from 264 million euros in 2023 to 78 million euros in 2024, while losses increased from 9 million euros to 107 million euros.

Management attributed the decline to market saturation, the removal of subsidy programs, and intense pricing competition from low-cost manufacturers in China. While several subsidiary companies are expected to be wound down, customer service for existing battery owners will continue for the time being. Current restructuring plans suggest that only one manufacturing facility may remain operational.
