Sonnen GmbH insolvency proceedings
Overview
German solar battery specialist sonnen GmbH has filed for insolvency following a period of severe financial decline. The company, which specializes in residential and small-business energy storage systems, saw its revenue drop from approximately 264 million euros in 2023 to between 68.4 million and 78 million euros in 2024, while losses expanded to 107 million euros.
Management attributed the downturn to market saturation, the removal of subsidy programs, and intense pricing competition from Chinese manufacturers. The filing follows a recent change in ownership in August 2026, when the energy conglomerate Shell sold the company to the investor Tiven.
The insolvency puts approximately 400 jobs at risk across Germany, Italy, Great Britain, the United States, and Australia. While several subsidiaries are expected to be wound down and only one production site may remain operational, plans are reportedly in place to maintain customer service for the company’s more than 150,000 existing battery owners.
