Sonora concludes indigenous rights law consultation assemblies

The National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI) has concluded regional consultation assemblies in Sonora regarding the proposed General Law on the Rights of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples. The final session took place in Mesa Colorada, Álamos, involving traditional authorities and members from the seven communities of the Guarijío people.

During the working sessions, participants analyzed the proposed articles and submitted modifications to ensure their rights are protected within the new legal framework. Previous meetings in the state were held in Vícam, Etchojoa, and Hermosillo.

Ernesto Macario Rodríguez, traditional governor of Los Estrados representing the Guarijío people, stated that the process is a vital step toward recognizing indigenous rights, emphasizing that the proposals must result in concrete actions for the communities rather than remaining merely as written law. These consultations follow instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum to maintain direct dialogue with indigenous peoples.
