Mexico activates emergency protocols amid Hurricane Polo and heavy monsoon rains
Mexico is facing widespread weather emergencies due to the presence of Hurricane Polo in the Pacific and the effects of the summer monsoon. Authorities across multiple states have activated contingency plans to manage heavy rainfall, potential flooding, and landslides.
In the Sierra Norte of Puebla, the state government has established a permanent preventive strategy, coordinating with the military and civil protection to monitor rivers, dams, and roads. Temporary shelters in Huauchinango and Xicotepec are prepared to accommodate up to 500 people. Similarly, in Yucatán, Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena confirmed the activation of Operativo Ciclón 2026 to ensure readiness through meteorological surveillance and verified shelters.
In Jalisco, over 200 civil protection elements have been deployed to the coast, including Puerto Vallarta and Cihuatlán, to monitor maritime conditions and assist vulnerable communities. In Sinaloa and Sonora, heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected to cause flooding and rising river levels. Authorities in Mazatlán are also coordinating with social welfare agencies to prepare for potential inundations.
Other regional impacts include fallen trees and infrastructure concerns in Puebla City, and warnings of intense storms and hail in Chihuahua. Security forces in Guerrero have also reported significant activity in recent weeks, including various arrests and seizures during coordinated operations.
