Sonora Government Launches Livestock Disease Drill and Popular Food Kitchen Funding
The Sonora state government, through its Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Water Resources, Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sagarhpa), staged a preventive simulation to reinforce response capabilities against the cattle warble (gusano barrenador). Coordinated with health authorities, academia, the Mexico‑United States Commission for Animal Disease Prevention and local livestock unions, the drill aims to keep the state free of the parasite that can affect both animals and humans. Officials highlighted ongoing surveillance, wound‑care protocols for calves and strict inspection of livestock facilities as key preventive actions.
Separately, the Sonora System for Integral Family Development (DIF) issued a call for applications for its 2026 Popular Kitchens Program. The initiative seeks to strengthen food security for vulnerable groups—including children, the elderly, migrants, indigenous communities and low‑income families—by providing hygienic, nutritious meals through municipal DIF units, civil‑society organizations, community kitchens and public schools. Applications were accepted from 15‑22 May 2026, with results announced on 29 May and support distribution slated for August 2026.
