Sonora implements regional economic development strategies

The state of Sonora is implementing various economic development strategies focused on industrial growth and local entrepreneurship. Under the Plan México and the Plan Sonora de Energías Sostenibles, the region is prioritizing the strengthening of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), particularly those led by young entrepreneurs. Senator Lorenia Valles Sampedro noted that Sonora is positioning itself as a central hub for economic development in Mexico due to its strategic location for international trade and infrastructure development.

In the United States, the Sonora City Council has unanimously approved a 2026-2031 Economic Development Strategy. This plan, developed with Przybyla Advisors, focuses on five key objectives: business attraction and retention, community placemaking and tourism, planning and policy integration, securing grant funding, and regional workforce development. The strategy aims to align local efforts with state and federal initiatives to support small businesses and housing options.

Additionally, the Sonora-Arizona Commission continues to serve as a bilateral mechanism to foster cooperation between governments and the private sector, facilitating the exchange of technology, investment, and raw materials across the border.
