Sonora environmental remediation and economic development

Overview

The state of Sonora is advancing environmental remediation and economic development initiatives. The Mexican federal and state governments have launched a remediation program for the Sonora River basin to address soil and sediment contamination following a 2014 chemical spill. This effort, part of the ‘Plan de Justicia para Cananea’, includes an initial 654 million peso investment to remove heavy metals, alongside plans for a new hospital and improved water access.

Parallel to environmental efforts, Sonora is pursuing large-scale economic growth. The state announced 83 investment projects totaling 32.5 billion dollars across the industrial, tourism, and residential sectors, which are expected to create 65,000 jobs. This includes the manufacturing of the ‘Beyond’ multipurpose electric vehicle in Hermosillo.

To support these goals, the region is implementing strategies such as ‘Plan México’ and ‘Plan Sonora de Energías Sostenibles’ to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises. Cross-border cooperation is also being facilitated through the Sonora-Arizona Commission to encourage the exchange of technology, investment, and raw materials.
