Sonora, Mexico braces for heavy rain and thunderstorms

The Mexican National Weather Service (Servicio Meteorológico Nacional) issued warnings that heavy rain and strong thunderstorms will affect eastern and northeastern Sonora on the night of 26 July and into the early hours of 27 July. A combination of the regional monsoon flow and a low‑pressure channel over the Sierra Madre Occidental will create intense precipitation, with reports of possible hail, strong gusts and lightning. Authorities advise residents to stay alert to weather alerts, avoid crossing floodwaters, and exercise caution while driving, especially on night‑time roads where visibility may be reduced.

The forecast also notes that Hurricane Genevieve, tracked parallel to the Pacific coast, could further increase moisture into western Mexican states, though its direct impact on Sonora is limited. The expected rainfall totals range from 75 to 150 mm in the most affected northern and central zones, raising the risk of temporary flash flooding and rising stream levels.

Precautionary measures are recommended for the Hermosillo–Santa Ana corridor and other vulnerable areas, as the atmospheric conditions remain favorable for rapid storm development throughout the night.
