Sonora, Mexico faces extreme heat and thunderstorms

The state of Sonora is under a forecast of extreme heat, with maximum temperatures projected between 40 °C and 46 °C across most of the region. A high‑pressure system will keep conditions very hot, especially in the north and central areas.

During the night of Sunday into Monday, the southern and southeastern parts of Sonora are expected to receive 25‑50 mm of rain accompanied by strong thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds up to 60 km/h and possible hail. Authorities warn that the rains could cause flash flooding, urban water‑logging, river rises, landslides in mountainous zones and temporary road disruptions. Residents are advised to stay alert to official warnings, avoid crossing streams, limit outdoor exposure during peak heat, stay hydrated and protect vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.

The same weather pattern is bringing heavy rains to other Mexican states, including Jalisco, Chihuahua, Sinaloa and parts of central Mexico, raising broader flood and landslide concerns nationwide.
