Sonora launches river remediation and 32.5 billion dollar investment plan
The Mexican federal and Sonora state governments have launched a major remediation program for the Sonora River basin, following a 2014 chemical spill by Grupo México. With an initial investment of 654 million pesos, the project aims to address soil and sediment contamination across eight municipalities. Technical works to remove heavy metals are scheduled to begin in September, with the first phase expected to conclude by the end of 2026. This initiative is part of the Plan de Justicia para Cananea, which also includes constructing a hospital and improving water access for affected communities.
Separately, the state of Sonora has presented a significant economic development portfolio. The government and the Investment Promotion Committee announced 83 investment projects totaling 32.5 billion dollars. These projects, spanning industrial, tourism, and residential sectors, are projected to create 65,000 jobs. Notable among these is the development of Beyond, a multipurpose electric vehicle to be manufactured in Hermosillo with a projected 128 million dollar investment. The vehicle is expected to feature 85 percent national content.
