Mexico advances legal protections and institutional commitments for women's rights

Mexican institutions are advancing legislative and institutional measures to protect women's rights and combat gender-based violence.

The National Electoral Institute (INE) has reaffirmed its commitment to preventing and eradicating violence against women and girls. Through its Technical Unit for Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination, the institute is integrating gender perspectives into electoral processes to ensure inclusion and respect for human rights, particularly for female candidates, ahead of the 2026–2027 Federal Electoral Process.

Additionally, the Gender Equality Commission has unanimously approved reforms to the General Law on Women's Access to a Life Free of Violence. These reforms aim to strengthen legal principles by including human dignity, women's autonomy, and legal security as guiding pillars. The changes also seek to address and combat digital violence.
