Sony Pictures acquires film rights to horror game Mouthwashing
Sony Pictures, through its Screen Gems division, has acquired the film rights to the psychological horror video game Mouthwashing. Developed by Swedish studio Wrong Organ and published by Critical Reflex, the game follows five crew members stranded on the space freighter Tulpar, struggling with isolation, starvation, and paranoia.
Karyn Kusama, known for directing Jennifer’s Body and the series Yellowjackets, is attached to direct the adaptation. The screenplay will be written by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, frequent collaborators of Kusama. The project will be produced by Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, and Vince Cheng via their production company, Crooked Highway.
While specific plot details and casting have not been announced, the film follows the success of the game, which has sold nearly one million copies on PC and recently launched on consoles including PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. The game has received critical acclaim, winning awards for Best Narrative and Players’ Choice at the Horror Game Awards.
