Mouthwashing video game commercial expansion

Overview

Following its initial PC release, the space horror game Mouthwashing, developed by Wrong Organ and published by Critical Reflex, was scheduled for release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch on October 29. The title had previously surpassed 800,000 sales.

Sony Pictures has acquired the feature film rights to the game through its Screen Gems division. The adaptation will be produced under the Crooked Highway banner by Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, and Vince Cheng. Director Karyn Kusama is attached to lead the project, with a screenplay written by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay. The film is expected to follow the game’s narrative regarding five crew members stranded on the Tulpar, an interplanetary freight ship, as they face starvation, isolation, and paranoia.

By this stage, the original game had reached nearly 1 million units in sales, earned high scores on Metacritic, and garnered massive social media engagement, including billions of views across platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. The game has also won awards for Best Narrative and Players’ Choice at the Horror Game Awards.

With the console launch, the game is now available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and has also been added to Xbox Game Pass.
