Anthropic sued by Sony and Warner over AI music training
Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music have filed a lawsuit in a California federal court against AI company Anthropic, alleging the unauthorized use of tens of thousands of copyrighted musical compositions to train its Claude AI models.
The complaint names Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and co-founder Benjamin Mann as individual defendants. The publishers allege that Anthropic obtained copyrighted material through methods including BitTorrent downloads, scraping lyrics from licensed websites, and using datasets like Common Crawl and The Pile. The lawsuit claims Claude is capable of reproducing near-identical or identical versions of protected songs, which harms the market for the original works.
Plaintiffs are seeking statutory damages of up to $150,000 for each work allegedly willfully infringed, plus up to $25,000 per song for the alleged removal of copyright management information. The lawsuit identifies various works by artists such as Taylor Swift, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Survivor as being among those used without permission. Anthropic has previously argued that its AI training constitutes fair use.
