Sony and Warner sue Anthropic over music copyright infringement
Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music, along with dozens of affiliated publishers, have filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Anthropic in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The lawsuit, filed on August 28, 2026, names Anthropic, CEO Dario Amodei, and co-founder Benjamin Mann as defendants.
The plaintiffs allege that Anthropic engaged in a massive campaign of illegal torrenting, scraping, and downloading to acquire tens of thousands of copyrighted musical compositions, including lyrics and sheet music, to train its Claude AI models. Specific works mentioned include hits by The Beatles, Taylor Swift, and Michael Jackson. The complaint further alleges that Anthropic obtained millions of books from pirated sources like Library Genesis and Pirate Library Mirror, some of which contained protected musical content.
The publishers are seeking statutory damages of up to $150,000 per willfully infringed work and up to $25,000 for each instance of unlawful removal of copyright management information. Given the scale of the alleged infringement, theoretical damages could reach billions of dollars. Anthropic has denied the allegations and stated its intention to defend itself in court.
