Sony shifts PlayStation strategy toward digital distribution by 2028
Sony is transitioning toward a digital-first strategy for PlayStation, with plans to phase out physical disc production for new titles by January 2028. While Sony DADC clarified that disc manufacturing is expected to decrease by 10% rather than collapse entirely, the long-term goal remains a shift toward digital distribution. This move has sparked significant backlash from the gaming community, particularly regarding the loss of physical ownership and the potential impact on regions where PlayStation Network (PSN) services are currently unavailable in approximately 62% of countries.
In response to user hostility and harassment following these announcements, Sony’s Japanese division has implemented new behavioral guidelines to protect employees from abusive customer conduct. This aligns with Japanese national laws requiring employers to prevent customer harassment.
Strategically, Sony is shifting its focus during the second half of the PS5 lifecycle. Rather than aggressive hardware sales, the company is prioritizing recurring revenue through services like PS Plus, aiming to maximize value from its existing base of over 125 million monthly active users.
In recent news, Sony held a dual State of Play event, highlighting upcoming titles such as Final Fantasy VII: Revelation, which is slated for release on April 8, 2027, for PS5, PC, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.
