Sony launches FX5 cinema camera with Open Gate and internal RAW

Sony Electronics announced the FX5, a new full‑frame member of its Cinema Line. The camera uses a 16.6‑megapixel fully stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor paired with the BIONZ XR2 image processor and a dedicated AI unit. Sony rates the sensor at over 15 stops of dynamic range in S‑Log3, and it offers three base ISOs (800, 4000, 12800) plus Dual‑Gain shooting for low‑noise performance.

For the first time in the FX series the FX5 supports Open‑Gate 3:2 recording and internal 16‑bit X‑OCN RAW (with new C1 and C2 codecs), eliminating the need for an external recorder. Video modes include 5K‑60 fps, 4K‑120 fps and Full HD‑240 fps. The body adds 5‑axis in‑body stabilization, AI‑driven autofocus with human‑pose tracking, a 3.5‑inch multi‑angle touchscreen, optional detachable OLED viewfinder and an XLR handle that records 96 kHz, 32‑bit float audio.

Claudio Miranda, ASC, praised the FX5’s blend of image quality and portability, while director Gareth Edwards used it on a project across Cambodia, Thailand and Nepal, calling it “the run‑and‑gun cinema camera to beat.” The FX5 will ship in mid‑August 2026 with a suggested retail price of $4,899 for the body alone and $5,499 with the XLR handle.
