Sony FX5 launch, high demand, and ongoing shipment delays

Overview

Sony officially launched the FX5 full-frame cinema camera on 22 July 2026. The model features a 16.6-MP stacked Exmor RS sensor, BIONZ XR2 processor with a dedicated AI unit, and supports 5K Open-Gate recording and internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW. Pricing for the body-only version was established at approximately $4,898 in the US, £4,699 in the UK, and €5,399 in Germany. Following the launch, demand far exceeded Sony's initial forecasts, influencing the market for related models like the FX3.

In August 2026, Sony halted FX5 shipments due to undisclosed quality control issues related to the electronic viewfinder. Further complications emerged as shipping schedules were pushed from mid-August to September due to high preorder volumes, potential quality control issues, and a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture affecting Sony’s image sensor plant. On 19 August, Sony announced a postponement for the FX5 release, citing “production issues”, which also affected accessories such as the DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder and XLR-H2 handle unit.

By October 2026, shipping delays persisted. Sony’s European websites in the UK, France, and Germany updated the expected shipping date to 16 November, a further postponement from the previous target of 16 October. These delays continue to impact the camera body and accessories, including the VMC-BNCU1 timecode adapter cable. In the United States, retailers like B&H continue to accept preorders for the body at $4,898, though no specific availability date has been provided for the American market.
