Sony considers delaying PlayStation physical media phase-out

Sony is facing significant industry pressure regarding its plan to phase out physical PlayStation game discs by January 2028. While the company has maintained its stance, reports suggest Sony may delay this transition by one to two years. This potential shift is driven by competitive pressure from Microsoft, which is reportedly developing next-generation Xbox hardware, codenamed Project Helix, that may continue to support physical media. Additionally, Microsoft has introduced a 'Disc to Digital' program to facilitate the transition for physical owners.

Internal and external friction is mounting. Third-party developers and publishers have expressed resentment toward the digital-only move, noting that physical sales are a major revenue source for smaller studios. Some developers have even threatened to withhold major titles from PlayStation if physical versions are not guaranteed.

Separately, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki has signaled a strategic shift for the PlayStation 5. As the console enters the latter half of its lifecycle, with over 95 million units sold, the company is prioritizing the monetization of its 125 million monthly active users through recurring revenue streams like PlayStation Plus, rather than aggressive hardware sales. In legal proceedings, Sony has also defended its digital model by asserting that software is licensed to users rather than sold as owned property.
