Suno faces second lawsuit from Sony and Universal Music over AI training

Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group (UMG) have filed a second lawsuit against AI music platform Suno in a Boston federal court. The labels allege that Suno’s new v6 models were trained on 60,202 copyrighted sound recordings without authorization. The plaintiffs argue that Suno is utilizing a process similar to “knowledge distillation,” where models are trained on the outputs of previous models that were themselves built on unauthorized data.

Suno has contested these claims, stating that its v6 models were trained using a combination of licensed content from partners like Warner Music Group and BMG, as well as “interactions including creations and preference signals” from its user community. The company maintains that the allegations are fundamentally flawed in both fact and law.

In a separate legal matter, Universal Music Group and Warner labels have requested a court to dismiss a lawsuit brought by the American Federation of Musicians (AFM). The AFM alleges that recordings performed by its members were licensed to AI companies, including Suno and Udio, without proper compensation or notification to the musicians.
