Sony Pictures to adapt psychological horror game Mouthwashing

Sony Pictures has acquired the feature film rights to adapt the indie psychological horror video game Mouthwashing. The film adaptation will be directed by Karyn Kusama, known for her work on Jennifer’s Body. The screenplay is being written by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who previously collaborated with Kusama on The Invitation.

Filmmakers Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill will join the production through their Crooked Highway banner. The story is based on the game developed by Wrong Organ and published by Critical Reflex, which follows five crew members stranded on a wrecked space freighter, the Tulpar, after a crash on an isolated asteroid. The narrative focuses on themes of isolation, dwindling supplies, and psychological decay among the survivors.

This project follows the recent commercial success of horror adaptations in Hollywood and aligns with a growing trend of studios targeting critically acclaimed gaming intellectual properties for film development.
